RATIONALE
One of the main changes I made in the illustration was to move elements in the composition, simplified the elements and add text to strengthen the meaning. The main pouring the liquid was repositioned to the other side. The balance scale was enlarged and made a significant part of the piece. The man trying to escape and the man behind him are tied to the lighter scale. The covered in liquid is lower to emphasize the power imbalance. The jar with flowers and snake is larger to highlight its symbolism. I increased the saturation of foreground elements and decreased it of the background elements to increase contrast.

The piece titled 'Suppressive Conformity' critiques the oppressive nature of society. The man at the center or the deviant represents individuals rebelling against the system, while the man behind him or the enforcer tries to catch him. Despite the enforcer believing he his right, both are victims to the oppressive system. The power holder is represented by the man pouring the liquid onto the heavier scale to show their overwhelming control while ignoring the injustice. The balance scale represents the power imbalance. The jar with snake, water and flowers  in it represents the potential for change from the deviant's act of rebellion.

Contrast is used using color saturation. Gestalt principles such figure/ground and continuation is used to guide the viewers eye around the piece. Harmony and unity is achieved through a cohesive color palette. Movement direct the attention of the viewer from the enforcer, deviant, to the scale and then to the rest of the piece. Text was used in the piece to further reinforce its meaning.

REFLECTIONS

What have I learnt in this module?

This module played a beneficial role in improving my design skills. This is a basic but core module that teaches the main principles that create good design. Design principles are the most necessary foundational knowledge set that is needs to be learned before anything else. The lectures and the PowerPoint presentations provided to be were simple and easy to digest. The task 1 exercise also helped me strengthen what I learned. After familiarizing myself with design principles, I feel like my observational and critical thinking skills vastly improved when it came to my own work as well as others. Composition and flow are things are prioritize the most while making my sketches.
What did I enjoy the most?

What did I not enjoy the most?

My most favorite part of doing these assignments has to be finding artworks for each design principles as I go to put art of my favorite artists in it. I also had fun choosing the artwork that I wish to make changes to. My least favorite part is the writing section of my e-blog. I especially really disliked writing an in depth analysis of 300-350 words for my chosen artwork. However, forcing me to sit down and write my perception of the piece, allowed me to verbalize my ideas and thoughts, which helped me improve my communication capacity.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?

After taking this module, I mainly learned my tastes in design and art. I found myself to be more analytical about the composition of the piece from sketch to finish. I try to break down the details and structure of other design works to better understand why I like them. In the process of searching for the art piece, I came across a new artist and I incredibly enjoy his work.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

When it came to my thought process, I have noticed myself to simplify elements and details to make the information as straightforward as possible. I also find myself focusing on effective composition and flow. What has not changed, is my desire to make my design work people focused over background and text. I tend to frame the composition in a way that leads our eye towards the main character of the piece.

What are my aspirations?

One of my main aspirations is to improve my design skills, as much as possible within the given timeframe of my studies. I would also like to experiment into different styles that I am not familiar with so I can broaden my skill range. I would also like to push myself out of my comfort zone more so I can improve quicker.
