INSTRUCTIONS

Task 3 : Development and Design
For Task 3 we are required to chose one of the sketches we have made and develop the sketch into the final design work. Students have to provide a 200 word rationale explaining their decisions in their design. In depth feedback answering the relevant questions must also be included in the Blogspot.

TASK 3

Finalized sketch

Work progress

I started my moving the elements around and coloring over details i wanted to remove. This is my initial sketch to figure out my final composition.

Then I cleaned up the coloring and added elements.

Finally I added text to the artwork to finalize the artwork.

I changed the dimensions of the artwork to make it A4 size.

200 word Rationale

One of the main changes I made in the illustration was to move elements in the composition, simplified the elements and add text to strengthen the meaning. The main pouring the liquid was repositioned to the other side. The balance scale was enlarged and made a significant part of the piece. The man trying to escape and the man behind him are tied to the lighter scale. The covered in liquid is lower to emphasize the power imbalance. The jar with flowers and snake is larger to highlight its symbolism. I increased the saturation of foreground elements and decreased it of the background elements to increase contrast.

The piece titled 'Suppressive Conformity' critiques the oppressive nature of society. The man at the center or the deviant represents individuals rebelling against the system, while the man behind him or the enforcer tries to catch him. Despite the enforcer believing he his right, both are victims to the oppressive system. The power holder is represented by the man pouring the liquid onto the heavier scale to show their overwhelming control while ignoring the injustice. The balance scale represents the power imbalance. The jar with snake, water and flowers  in it represents the potential for change from the deviant's act of rebellion.

Contrast is used using color saturation. Gestalt principles such figure/ground and continuation is used to guide the viewers eye around the piece. Harmony and unity is achieved through a cohesive color palette. Movement direct the attention of the viewer from the enforcer, deviant, to the scale and then to the rest of the piece. Text was used in the piece to further reinforce its meaning.

Detailed Analysis

i) The decisions I made in the design

For the composition I mainly wanted to change the elements in the composition and simplify the design. I added text in the piece to fill out the empty space while also strengthening the meaning of the piece. I moved the man pouring the liquid down to the other direction while the other two characters remained in the same area. I increased the size of the balance scale to be a more prominent part of the piece. The man who is trying to escape and the man who is trying to catch him are both tied down by the ropes which are connected to one of the scales. The scale covered in liquid is placed lower compared to the other scale. I also changed the position of the hands that were holding the scale. I made the jar with the flowers and the snake to be bigger.

I removed other random elements such as the cat, and the extra hands, stars, etc. I also vastly simplified the designs of all the elements. I made the background elements more unsaturated and the elements in the foreground more saturated. This is so that the main elements of the piece can stand out.

ii) Meaning/Purpose of the design

Main purpose of the changes I made to the design is to strengthen the meaning I saw in the piece. I started off with providing a suitable title called ‘Suppressive Conformity’. This illustration represents the deep political issue that arises in every society.

The centered character with the purple scarf represents the simple person in society that is forced into the restrictive social norms of a community. He represents the few people who are tired of their oppressive and monotonous life and rebel against it for a better life. The people in power are afraid of rule breakers such as him as it could result in an uprising against the existing government.

The character behind him is a rule enforcer trying to catch him and make him abide by the rules. The enforcer assumes he is doing the right thing by following his duty. Both him and the deviant are tied down to the lighter scale to show that they are both victims to the oppressive system and have no real effect or power in this society.

The one pouring the liquid is on the other side. He represents the people in power who are actually controlling the system. They have a major effect on the overall structure of society. Despite being completely aware of their oppressive ways, they are peaceful and ignorant. You can also see this through them closing off their eyes to represent the idea ‘Turning a blind eye’.

The weighing scale represents the power imbalance in society. The power holders are on the right pouring the liquid on the scale which is weighed down, to show the overflowing amount of power they hold in society. While the enforcer and the deviant are on the other side tied to the lighter scale to show that the weight of their actions is insignificant.

I also decided to place the jar with the snake and flowers in the middle. The snake symbolizes rebirth as well as evil. It represents the dual nature of the government. Abuse of governmental power can result in evil however it has the power to change for the better of society. The water represents change, rejuvenation. Whereas yellow flowers represent new beginnings and positivity. This indicates the possibility of change in the oppressive system as a result of the deviants behavior.

As for the text I added the title 'SUPPRESSIVE CONFORMITY’ on the top and a small body of text in the bottom which is a commentary from the deviant talking about the contradiction of the enforcers actions.

iii) The design principles used

Contrast
In order to create contrast between the foreground elements (the deviant, enforcer, power holder, balance scale, and jar) and the background elements of the piece, I increased the saturation of the foreground elements and reduced the saturation of the background elements.

Gestalt theory
I incorporated the principles of Figure and Ground into the piece, as we can clearly distinguish the difference between the foreground and background elements. I also used the principle of continuation in the art piece as there is a continuous flow of the eye from the enforcer to the deviant to the rest of the piece.

Harmony and unity
There is harmony and unity in the art piece as the colors used in the art piece complement each other in a harmonious way. I incorporated the colors blue, purple, black, orange, pink, brown, yellow in the piece.

Movement
This piece has a beautiful flow to the piece as it directs our eyes from the enforcer to the deviant, to the vase, the balance scale and finally for the enforcer and then to the rest of the piece.

Symbol
Here I used the symbols of scales, vase, snake, flowers and hands to represent different things. The balance scale represents the difference in the power balance in the society between the power holder and the enforcer and deviant. The blue hands represent the forces of power that control the system without our knowledge. The vase with the snake and the flowers represent the possibility of change or improvement of the oppressive system as a result of the deviants behavior.

Word and image
Here I added text in the image of the artwork to emphasize the meaning of the piece to be stronger. I added the title Suppressive Conformity in the art piece which represents the contradictory result of conforming to the social norms. Where the text in the bottom is the commentary given by the deviant on the enforcers that aim to stop him.

Emphasis
Here the deviant is meant to be the point of focus of the focal point of the piece.

FEEDBACK

Week 5 -
He had asked me to change the positioning of some of the text to improve the composition of the design.

Week 6 -
He asked me to reduce the opacity of the background so that the text can be seen clearly.

Week 7-
Mr. Fauzi asked me to change the dimensions of the artwork
