Lecture 3 - Miller's Law of Memory
1.Miller's Law: Miller's law suggests how our short-term memory is limited when it comes to remembering more than seven information "objects," and how retaining that information does not last longer than 30 seconds. Most human brains are incapable of holding more than roughly seven items in their short-term memory at once — or as Miller put it, “the magical number seven, plus or minus two.”
2. The Art of refining options: As grasping of multiple information at
once is difficult. That is why the clustering of information or data is a technical
response to Miller's rule of thumb. If the message is delivered
through smaller chunks of information, our brain has the opportunity
to work within the limits of short-term memory.
INSTRUCTIONS
Exercise 2 : L.A.T.C.H Infographic Poster
Students are required to create a visual infographic poster
of our own topic of choice based on the LATCH theory. We can
use any photo editing or illustrating software to assemble the
information.
EXCERCISE 2: L.A.T.C.H. INFOGRAPHIC POSTER
Selection of Topic
First was coming up with an idea for my infographic
poster. I was very inspired by Indian culture,
especially Malayali culture and wanted to express that
through my poster. I decided to make my poster based of
the Indian dance form originated in Kerela called
'Kathakali'.
Fig 1.1 Kathakali dance
Then it was coming up with the information for the
infographic for all the 4 categories within LATCH
theory :
1. Location: (State of origin of the dance form)
2. Time: (Timeline of the evolution of dance form)
3. Category: (3 aspects of the dance form: costume,
dance, music)
4. Hierarchy: (The structure of a Kathakali play)
Inspiration
Then I began gathering inspiration from Pinterest, in
order to help me with coming up with ideas. I wanted to
come up with an infographic poster where the main
artwork tied into the other details and information
present in the infographic. In order to help with
figuring out the color palette I decided to go to Adobe
Color o extract color from the image of the Kathakali
dancer.
Sketch
I began by taking the image of a kathakali artist and
brought it into my drawing software 'Clip Studio
Paint' and then outlining the drawing from on top.

After the outlining I coloring it in.

Editing
After the illustration process, I began working on
Illustrator. I started with placing a gradient on
the canvas.
Fig 1.7 Adding Gradient
Then I imported the illustrated image.
Fig 1.8 Placing image
I then placed the colored shape below the
image.
Fig 1.9 Placing shapes
Then I started with placing the text on the shapes.
Each colored shape as a category of information:
Costume; green, Dance; light green, Music;
yellow.

Then started with the placing of the second group
of information: Title and the timeline.

The third group of information was place being
structure of the dance form.

Finally placed the information of
location.

Rationale
The infographic poster was based on the 'Kathakali Play'. The infographic follows all 5 categories of the LATCH method: Location, Alphabet, Timeline, Category, Heirarchy.
1. Category: For category aspect, I decided to explain different aspects of Kathakali; Costume, Dance, Music.
2. Alphabet: For Alphabet, arranged the categories of costume, dance and music in Alphabetical order
3. Location: For the location aspect of the LATCH method, I aim to specify the state of origin of Kathakali, which is Kerala. In other to further illustrate this, I placed the geographic map of Kerala.
4. Timeline: For this timeline aspect of the infographic is relevant different century timestamps during the evolution of Kathakali. I used square shapes interconnected by one line, each square indicating a century.
5. Hierarchy: Finally for hierarchy section, I decided to specify the structure of a Kathakali play, which has several important aspects to make it complete. Such as Lighting of the Vilaka (Lamp), Arrangu Keli, Todayam, Purupad, Melepadam, Kathakali Play, Extinguishing of the Lamp.
For the visual structure of the poster, I wanted the Kathakali dancer to be the center of the poster. I thought of using the skirt part of the their dress as a good shape to add information. I decided divide the shape into 3 parts to place the most relevant information of Kathakali which is the 3 categories of costume, dance, music. I structured the other sections of information as I saw it fit in the empty spaces in the poster.
REFLECTIONS
Before the making of this poster, I was very unfamiliar with the LATCH theory and how to apply to my poster. I initially had trouble finding topics that I could apply the LATCH theory on. Eventually I was inspired by the idea of sharing my culture through an infographic, especially, Indian classical dances. After that I needed to figure out the visual hierarchy which I then decided to center the character in the middle. With the color palette, I thought of using the colors already present on the Kathakali dancer for the infographic, which would allow it to be more cohesive.
This task allowed me to learn and better understand about the Latch theory. It also taught me about composition, visual hierarchy and the most attractive way to organize text. It taught me about properly organizing information in a beautiful and readable way. Overall I learned a lot as a result of this task.
