INSTRUCTIONS

Project 3: Illustrated Typographic Poster (20%)
For this assignment we are required to design a typographic poster that effectively convey a selected 'Quote of the Day' through creative typography.

INSPIRATION

I decided to go to Pinterest to gather references for inspiration.

SKETCHES

Initial Sketch

After gathering inspiration, i decided to search quotes for the quote of the day. The quote i decided to go with was “If you want to fly, give up everything that weighs you down.” ―Buddha. Then I began sketching ideas.
Figure 2.1 Sketches

For my design I decided to go with the quote ‘if you want to fly, give up everything that weighs you down’. I decided to go with the ideas of a bird and a kettle bell. The word ‘fly’ represents the bird, and the word ‘weighs’ is on the kettlebell. I made the word ‘fly’ thin and gave it wings. I made the word ‘weighs’ heavy looking and engraved it into the kettlebell. I went for a blue color palette for the poster.

MOOD BOARD

I then prepared a mood board for the poster design

PROCESS WORK

Images I used for the poster
Figure 4.1 Images I used for the poster
Adobe Photoshop

First i combined the water and sky image together
Figure 4.2 Combined sky and water

I copy pasted the water image and placed it in the bottom. I edited the bottom water effect to make it look like its underwater. I used adjustment layers such as color fill, gradient fill,  hue/saturation and brightness/contrast. I added a strip of blue and added adjustment layers to make the effect looks more believable.
Figure 4.3 Added depth to water

I added the image of the kettle bell and sliced the image in half. I reduced the opacity of the bottom image to make it look like its in the water. I also added the reflection of the tree on the water to make it part of the environment. I added effects to the kettle bell to make it part of the environment.
Figure 4.4 Added Kettle Bell

I added the splash effect to make it seem like the kettle bell is being splashed into the water. I added the image of the bird. I added adjustments to the bird and the kettle bell and I added their reflections to incorporate them more into the environment.

Adobe Illustrator

I imported the image into adobe illustrator. I typed out the quote using the fonts calibri and showcard gothic.

Then I changed to color of the font to dark blue
Figure 5.3 Changed text color

I overlap the handle of the kettle bell and the splash to make the words 'give up everything that' to like its in the background.
Figure 5.4 Overlapped kettle bell handle over text

I edited the word fly using distort tool
Figure 5.5 Warped the word 'FLY'

I used envelope distort with the word weigh to make it look like its wrapped around the kettle bell.
Figure 5.6 Warped the word 'WEIGHS'

I wasn't liking the composition as much so I made minor adjustments. I removed the picture of the bird and centralized the text.

REFLECTIONS

This assignment was very challenging as I struggle with composition. I also had difficulty making a composition with a big quote. This exercise also improved my knowledge in Photoshop as well as illustrator. I learned to combine both the programs to make one composition. I better learned to use the envelope distort tool, pencil tool, 3d tool on illustrator.
