INSTRUCTIONS

Project 2: Decisive Movement (20%)
This assignment requires placing our previous vormator character into a Pokémon card composition, by using foreground, midground, and background elements. New shapes can be created that isn't bound by the vormator shapes or rules. New character can be created outside the bounds of the vormator shapes.

 SKETCHES

Initial Sketches
The first week after project 2 was assigned, we were asked to prepare a mood board with our final sketches, inspirations, color palette and rationale. I begin working on the sketches for the background for our character. Since the background must explain the universe the character lives in, I tried to detail out my character and his purpose. This help me decide the background elements as well as its overall color palette

Final Sketch
After several  sketches I finally settled on this

MOOD BOARD

Then I begin working on the mood board

Rationale

For this assignment, I tried to explore what kind of environment setting he lives in. For that I tried to develop him as a character. I looked at Pinterest to find backgrounds that would fit the character. I wanted to go for color palette with red and blues so that the character would blend in with the environment. I used the rule of thirds composition technique for this assignment. I made it a top down view and all the buildings in the background are leading the eyes to the character. Upshot perspective leads to the intimidating feeling of the character. I added background elements such as rock pillars , and behind him a castle. He is standing in the pathway leading to the castle as he is guarding the path to prevent demons and other evil creatures from entering. The castle is inhabited by good hearted creatures.

BACKGROUND PROCESS

After Mr. Hafiz approved my sketch, I first brought it to the art program 'clip studio paint' to make it a digital sketch

I also tried to figure the color palette of the background

I started working on my final illustration in Adobe Illustrator.

FINAL BACKGROUND
I made edits to the final background, mainly changing the colors and values. This was done to increase clarity and to improve color harmony.

REFLECTIONS

This assignment was very challenging. The vormator created from before lacked in details I wanted to include, also its initial pose wasn't dynamic enough. This led me to redrawing and refining my character. I also struggled with ideas for the background and had to make many sketches to find one I was satisfied with. Mr. Hafiz also gave good feedback in the process. This assignment challenged me to work outside my comfort zone as illustrator is not a program I am not fully comfortable with. I learned to use the gradient tool and add textures better while doing my assignment. I feel like this assignment overall improved my technical knowledge of Adobe Illustrator.
