INSTRUCTIONS
Project 1: Exercises Vormator (20%)
This assignment limits you to a set of pre-defined shapes, and your goal is
to create a unique character by combining and manipulating these shapes
while adhering to specific rules. This is done in Adobe illustrator.
SKETCHES
Figure 1.1 My initial character idea sketches
My initial ideas for character design was to use triangle shapes for the
character's silhouette. I used clothing like cloaks, robes, capes to
emphasize the triangle shapes. Initially I was also leaning towards
making my character more anthropomorphic, especially a bull. My goal was
to make a mysterious character.
Figure 1.2 First Iteration
This my first attempt of making my character based on my initial sketches
with the vector shapes given. I had a difficult time recreating the
character with the shapes, so I went with a different design. I also
decided to give up on the idea of making a bull character.
FINAL CHARACTER DESIGN
Figure 2.1. Final Character Design
Figure 2.2 Silhouette and stroke only version
After making a design I was happy with, I decided to add flat colors. I
tried to limit the color palette and experimented with deeper, darker
colors.
REFLECTIONS
This assignment was a challenging task. We were required to make a character
only with the shapes given by the lecturer. We are not allowed to change the
shape or proportion of the shapes. This assignment will be evaluated based
on our silhouette and the quality of the shapes we traced. This assignment
challenged me to think creatively as I had to think of a character design
with a good silhouette and idea. The limitations of only using the shapes
also forced me to think outside of the box. I also had to focus on making my
character design appealing, which improves my design tastes.
